From packaging line to roof elements: Benjamin’s journey at Unilin

February 6, 2026 3 minutes reading

In 2016, fresh out of school, Benjamin Maroy started as an operator at Unilin Flooring in Wielsbeke. Initially hired on an interim basis, he worked on the Quick-Step packaging line and in the years that followed, he took on various roles at different sites within Unilin. He was consistently driven by his eye for quality and his passion for production.

In a nutshell

  • Benjamin Maroy joined Unilin Flooring after completing his studies in 2016: first as an operator in Wielsbeke and later as a lab assistant in Avelgem (Belgium).
  • In January 2026, he took on a challenge as a roof elements operator at Unilin Insulation in Desselgem (Belgium).

First steps in production

This year marks a decade at Unilin for Benjamin Maroy (27). “I graduated in June 2016 and a few months later I started at Unilin Flooring on the Quick-Step packaging line. For the first six months, I worked as a temporary agency worker to see whether the job was right for me. In 2017, I was offered a permanent contract.

He stayed there for approximately three years. He initially started as an operator on one line and later gained experience on other packaging lines as well. “The variety in working as an operator is a major advantage. I like having a wide range of tasks and the opportunity to keep learning, and that’s a given when you’re working as an operator on different lines.”

Further growth as an operator

At school Benjamin studied woodworking techniques. Then after three years on the packaging line, his team leader asked him if he’d be interested in becoming a milling machine operator and he was happy to accept. “I think he asked me because by then they knew that I’m driven, take responsibility and have an eye for quality and detail. I said yes on the spot.” On the milling line, Benjamin continued to learn and develop his technical knowledge and experience. He became familiar with different milling lines and combined this with other tasks.

From production to the lab

Benjamin continued to carry out this role with great passion but by late 2023 he started to look out for a position with regular daytime hours. Keen to remain at Unilin, he explored internal vacancies. “That’s how I ended up at Unilin Flooring in Avelgem, where I started as a lab assistant in a daytime schedule, which was a big change for me. I carried out various tests on vinyl flooring samples, including scratch and stain resistance.”

Back to the line

After two years, Benjamin felt that he missed production. “I like working on the line. It’s more hands-on and I really enjoy having control over the product.” Together with the HR manager in Avelgem, he looked for a role that was a better fit. “She contacted colleagues across different divisions and sites. After just one week, I was invited for an interview at Unilin Insulation in Desselgem.” For Benjamin, this was confirmation that employees really have a say and are well supported. 2026 began with a new challenge as a milling machine operator for roof elements at Unilin Insulation.

“There’s a lot of variety in milling work, with different finishes depending on the type of product."

His first weeks are now behind him. “My new colleagues gave me a warm welcome. I immediately felt at home and they’re helping me get off to a smooth start.” What does the future have in store? “I don’t plan that far ahead. I just see what comes my way.” What he does hope for is the opportunity to keep learning and to work in different positions here as well. “I can’t wait!”
