The global transition to sustainable solutions and production systems is in full swing. We also put our full weight behind this transition. We minimise the use of fossil fuels in our activities. By opting for sustainable materials and continuously improving the recyclability of our products, we reduce their ecological footprint.
The goal for 2030? Reduce our direct (scope 1) and indirect (scope 2) emissions by at least 42% compared to 2020. For emissions caused by raw materials and the processing of our products at the end of their useful life (scope 3), we are aiming for a reduction of 12.3%.
We follow the guidelines of the Science Based Targets initiative, an organisation that advocates best practices in the fight against global warming. This ensures that our sustainability goals are not only ambitious but also scientifically based.
With two green energy plants, five wind turbines and over 35,000 solar panels, we place maximum focus on sustainable energy. With success. In 2020 as much as 57% of our energy was of the renewable variety. In 2023 we were up to 61%.
Our current economic model is linear. We extract raw materials from the earth, turn them into products, use them and discard them at end of life, resulting in depleted raw materials and environmental pollution. But there is another way: in a circular economy raw materials are used over and over again.
This circular concept is at the very origin of Unilin. In 1960 we used flax shives – a residual product of the linen industry – to manufacture chipboards. Today that circularity remains the driving force behind everything we do. We focus on renewable and recycled materials and constantly upgrade the recyclability of our products.
Unilin has recently become the proud owner of several Cradle to Cradle® Material Health certificates for a generous selection of panels and several laminate floors. Moreover, Unilin even holds the full Cradle to Cradle certificate for a number of subfloors. By obtaining such reliable and independent certificates, we are offering our customers transparent information on the sustainability of our products, enabling them to make conscious, sustainable choices!
Unilin is Belgium's largest wood recycling company. Today our chipboards consist of 95% recycled wood. We now want to repeat this exercise with other product categories. It's time to do even better and recycle even more, sustainability expert Lasse Six explains.
Construction work on the two wind turbines next to the Unilin Insulation factory in Feluy (Seneffe) is in full swing. From 2022, 71% of the energy it uses will be sustainably produced. The project was officially inaugurated by Mayor Jacques Gobert on 9 November when the press was able to visit the impressive construction site for the first time.
